Laugh and Cry

A short TV ad produced by VoteVets is both funny and sad.  The ad parodies 1940-s newsreels deftly, right down to the chirpy smugness of the male narrator’s voice.

The ad contrasts an over-the-top celebration of American military prowess against fascism in World War 2 with the current reality (yes, it is real) of Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville single-handedly hobbling the command structure of our military by preventing promotions to replace retiring officers of high rank.

The “tight lips” referenced in the ad are the lips of other Republican pols who are not themselves blocking the promotions but do not have the guts to call out Tuberville for undermining national security with a political stunt that panders to neofascists in his base and theirs.

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Mel. Every time this comes up, I can’t understand how he’s been allowed to get away with his ill-advised hostage taking.

Love your description: “the chirpy smugness of the male narrator’s voice.”

  2. My daughters and I were talking about this the other day.
It’s absurd that he is allowed to get away with this, but that he is makes me think he’s the tip of the dung heap and there is more we don’t see…
